Questions we get asked

What lock does my home insurance actually require?
Most UK policies covering a wooden front or back door ask for a five-lever mortice deadlock conforming to British Standard BS3621, marked with the BSI kitemark. For UPVC and composite doors it is normally a multipoint lock with a cylinder meeting TS007 three-star or Sold Secure Diamond. Check your policy wording, and if you send us a photo of the lock edge we will tell you what you currently have.
What is lock snapping, and am I at risk?
Lock snapping is a technique that breaks a standard euro cylinder in two at its weakest point, giving access in under a minute and leaving very little visible damage. It affects UPVC and composite doors with ordinary cylinders. An anti-snap cylinder is engineered to break in a controlled place that leaves the lock still working. If your door is UPVC and the cylinder is more than a few years old, it is worth having it checked.
Should I change the locks when I move into a new place?
Yes. You have no way of knowing how many keys exist or who holds them — previous tenants, builders, cleaners, an ex-partner, an estate agent. It is one of the cheapest pieces of security you will ever buy, and it is the job we are asked for most often after a move.
Can you make one key open all my doors?
Usually, yes. Rekeying or replacing cylinders so a single key works your front door, back door and outbuilding is straightforward on most locks, provided the lock types are compatible. It is safer than it sounds: one well-chosen key is easier to keep track of than four you keep losing.
How long does a lock change take?
A euro cylinder swap is typically fifteen to twenty minutes. A mortice deadlock fitted into a door that has never had one takes longer, usually an hour or more, because the door has to be cut. We tell you which of those yours is before we start.
